Black History Month.

Friday 1st October kicks off Black History Month here in the UK with the aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.

The origins go back to the 1920s and the establishment of Negro History Week in the United States. In the UK it was launched in the 1980s in London and was largely the result of local community activism challenging racism in general in British society and the Eurocentric version of history that dominated the state school system.

Last year, Catherine Ross, Editor of Black History Month 2021 Magazine wrote that Black Lives Matter protests around the world had sparked a commitment among many individuals and organisations to educate themselves about Black history, heritage and culture – as part of understanding racism and standing in solidarity against it.

This year, a year on, Ross asks “has anything changed for the better?”

The short answer is yes and no. Anti-racism protests have certainly raised awareness of the issues with more people open to having a progressive debate on racism, including the UK’s colonial past. However, she comments that it still feels as if there’s a very long way to go.

Black History Month 2021 Magazine have launched the “Proud To Be” campaign.

Inspired by Black Lives Matter and invites Black and Brown people of all ages throughout the UK to share what they are Proud To Be. Making Black History Month 2021 personal and unique to individuals, families and communities, focusing on how we’re all making history all the time in our own ways, as well as the contributions and achievements of Black and Brown people throughout history. By asking people to share what they are Proud To Be we can share both individual stories and the vast richness of diversity that Black and Brown people bring to the UK.

Communicating with the StAR for your course area is important to feedback to your class the outcomes of the Learner Voice meetings. This enables an efficient feedback process to help the college improve the overall student experience at Bridgend College.
